It\u2019s not good enough, but it\u2019s a very significant step,\u201d Trump told reporters at the White House, adding that intermediaries \u201care negotiating now\u201d.<\/p>\n Trump warned on Sunday<\/a> that unless Tehran agreed by Tuesday evening to allow free passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, he would order strikes on Iran\u2019s power plants and bridges.<\/p>\n In peacetime, about 20 percent of the world\u2019s oil supplies pass through the strategic waterway, which links the Gulf to the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n Earlier on Monday, a 45-day ceasefire proposal was put forward by Pakistan after meetings seeking a diplomatic solution to the war, which was sparked on February 28 by Israeli and US attacks against Iran, which has responded by firing missiles at targets across the Middle East.<\/p>\n Iran\u2019s state-run IRNA news agency said Tehran had conveyed its response via Islamabad. Iran reportedly rejected the proposed truce, putting forward instead a call for a permanent end to the hostilities.<\/p>\n The Iranian proposal consisted of 10 clauses, including an end to conflicts in the region, a protocol for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, the lifting of sanctions and reconstruction, IRNA added.<\/p>\n \u201cWe won\u2019t merely accept a ceasefire,\u201d Mojtaba Ferdousi Pour, the head of Iran\u2019s diplomatic mission in Cairo, told The Associated Press news agency. \u201cWe only accept an end of the war with guarantees that we won\u2019t be attacked again.\u201d<\/p>\n The White House confirmed that the ceasefire proposal was under consideration but Trump had \u201cnot signed off\u201d on it and the war was continuing.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is one of many ideas, and POTUS [the president of the United States] has not signed off on it. Operation Epic Fury continues,\u201d a White House official told the AFP news agency.<\/p>\n Later, Trump said he was \u201chighly unlikely\u201d to postpone the deadline from 8pm Washington time on Tuesday (00:00 GMT). \u201cThey\u2019ve had plenty of time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Trump has warned that the US could bomb Iran \u201cback to the stone ages\u201d unless it agrees a deal.<\/p>\n Asked if he was concerned about suggestions that attacks on infrastructure are classified as a war crime, he retorted: \u201cI\u2019m not worried about it.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou know the war crime?\u201d he continued. \u201cThe war crime is allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon,\u201d adding that Iran\u2019s leaders are \u201canimals\u201d who have\u00a0 killed tens of thousands of protesters.<\/p>\n Iran\u2019s rejection of the ceasefire proposal came as Israel struck a key petrochemical plant for the South Pars gasfield and killed two commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.<\/p>\n Israel claimed responsibility for the strikes on the plant in Asaluyeh<\/a>, a key site for Iran\u2019s energy sector and its wider economy, both for production of petroleum by-products and for joint work with Qatar on the world\u2019s largest natural gasfield. The strike appeared to be separate from Trump\u2019s threats and deadline.<\/p>\n Iran\u2019s grip on the strait has caused oil prices to surge and shaken the world economy.<\/p>\n The National Petrochemical Company said the situation was \u201cunder control\u201d after the strike with the extent of the damage being assessed.<\/p>\n \u201cA fire has been brought under control. The situation is currently under control, and technical aspects, as well as the extent of the damage, are under investigation,\u201d IRNA cited the petroleum company as saying, adding that no injuries had been reported.<\/p>\n The White House did not immediately comment on the attack.<\/p>\n After an Israeli attack on South Pars in March, Trump said Israel would not attack it again but warned that if Iran continued striking Qatar\u2019s energy infrastructure, the US would \u201cmassively blow up\u201d the field.<\/p>\n<\/div>\nRecommended Stories <\/h2>\n
