Tehran says the negotiations will be based on its 10-point proposal, which calls for control over Strait of Hormuz and lifting of all sanctions.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Iran has agreed to a two-week ceasefire with the United States, with its National Security Council saying talks with Washington will begin in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, on Friday, based on Tehran\u2019s 10-point proposal.<\/p>\n The statement on Wednesday came after US President Donald Trump said he had agreed to call off a threat to bomb Iran\u2019s power plants and bridges and \u201csuspend\u201d attacks on the country for two weeks.<\/p>\n list of 4 items<\/span>end of list<\/span><\/section>\n Trump said the truce was contingent on Iran agreeing to the \u201ccomplete, immediate and safe opening\u201d of the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway that connects the Gulf to the Arabian Sea and through which a fifth of global oil supply passes.<\/p>\n Iran\u2019s partial blockade of the strait \u2013 imposed in the aftermath of the US and Israel\u2019s attacks on February 28 \u2013 has disrupted global trade, driving up oil prices, roiling financial markets and causing fuel shortages across the world.<\/p>\n Iran\u2019s retaliatory attacks have reverberated across the Gulf and drawn in Lebanon\u2019s Hezbollah and Yemen\u2019s Houthis, both of which have launched attacks on Israel, significantly widening the conflict.<\/p>\n Trump said in his Truth Social statement that the US has received a 10-point proposal from Iran, \u201cand believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate\u201d.<\/p>\n He said the US and Iran have agreed on \u201calmost all of the various points of contention\u201d and that a two-week period will allow the agreement to be \u201cfinalised and consummated\u201d.<\/p>\n Iran\u2019s Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi, speaking on behalf of the Iranian National Security Council, confirmed Tehran\u2019s decision to halt the fighting.<\/p>\n \u201cIf attacks against Iran are halted, our powerful armed forces will cease their defensive operations,\u201d he said in a post on X.<\/p>\n Araghchi said that safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible in coordination with Iran\u2019s Armed Forces, and that the decision was taken in light of Trump\u2019s acceptance \u201cof the general framework of Iran\u2019s 10-point proposal as a basis for negotiations\u201d.<\/p>\n For his part,\u00a0Pakistan\u2019s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the warring sides had agreed to an \u201cimmediate ceasefire everywhere including Lebanon and elsewhere\u201d.<\/p>\n The move is \u201cEFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY\u201d, he wrote on X.<\/p>\n Sharif thanked the US and Iran and extended an invitation to \u201ctheir delegations to Islamabad on Friday, 10th April 2026, to further negotiate for a conclusive agreement to settle all disputes\u201d.<\/p>\n Iran\u2019s 10-point proposal \u2013 according to its National Security Council \u2013 calls for Iranian dominance and oversight of the Strait of Hormuz, which it said would grant it a \u201cunique economic and geopolitical position\u201d.<\/p>\n The proposal also calls for the withdrawal of all US combat forces from bases in the Middle East and a halt to military operations against allied armed groups across the region. It goes on to demand \u201cfull compensation\u201d for war damages, as well as the lifting of all sanctions by the US, the United Nations Security Council and the International Atomic Energy Agency.<\/p>\n The proposal also calls for the release of frozen Iranian assets abroad and the ratification of any final agreement in a binding UN Security Council resolution.<\/p>\n The Iranian council added that while Tehran has agreed to talks, it does so \u201cwith complete distrust of the American side\u201d.<\/p>\n It said Iran will allocate two weeks for these negotiations and that the time period \u201ccan be extended by agreement of the parties\u201d.<\/p>\n The council added that Iran stood ready to respond with \u201cfull force\u201d as soon as \u201cthe\u00a0slightest mistake by the enemy is made\u201d.<\/p>\n There has been no comment from Israel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\nRecommended Stories <\/h2>\n
